Why Mental Health in Construction is being talked about in the News

Mental Health in Construction

The construction industry is one of the most stressful industries to be in and considering that it is mainly male orientated, it means that men in general don't want to be seen as weak or troubled. Mental health in construction has been a major issue as it has been proven that the suicide rate has gone up dramatically in the latest past few years.

The lifestyle of this industry is very challenging considering the long hours and in some cases being away from family and friends for such a long period of time can take it's toll on the men on the job.

Then of course there's the whole "macho" attitude that most feel they need to have to fit in with the other men on site, how do they deal with situations they may have with themselves or issues that are in the home?

Talk About Stress at Work

A lot of men feel that they can't open up about their emotional problems, how ever small or large they may be because either they don't have that kind of relationship with their co-workers, or they just don't know how to.

The Signs That Employers Need to Look Out For

So how do we help these individuals feel that they can open up to someone in the construction industry to deal with the problems that may have festered for a while?

First, the employers need to learn about what signs to look our for in their work force. Signs could include:-
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Feelings of being overwhelmed
  • Feeling isolated from their co-workers
  • Less productivity
This list has many more issues to look out for but everyone of them not only affects others around the sufferer, it also affect how the company operates.

Think of it this way. If your employees are working at half speed because they are distracted by emotional issues, how will you keep your construction site on target? One part of the process, if not done at the same speed and accurateness as all other processes can have a knock on affect.

How Can a Construction Company Deal With The Problem?

Being aware of your employees can be difficult at times. Running a business is stressful at best, with so much to think about. There are so many cogs to the mechanics of business that sometimes the most important aspect of your business gets unseen until there are vital problems that pop up that need to be addressed.

Creating a time in the year where you offer mental health checks for your employees could well be a blessing in disguise.

When an employee is in a mental crisis, all they think about is how they are going to move forward with their issuses. Their mind is not on the job. So what does that mean for everyone around them and their employer?

If the mind of an employee is not on the job, this could be a road to disaster not only for the person who has the mental issue, but also for the people around them. They can not do their job properly that could in affect put others at risk.

Mental Health In

Construction

At New Foundation Counselling, we want all companies and organizations to understand how important it is to keep their employees in good health.

To have highly motivated and productive staff, you need to be aware of their well-being. To help constuction companies tackle this issue we have gathered together the information that we have, being in this sector for many years, and tailored a programme that is specific for the construction industry.

We believe that counselling in construction will help companies streamline their productivity by looking after their employees. Stress in the work place slows down productivity and there is no need for the employee to suffer in silence.

Is Mental Health An Issue In Construction?

Counselling In Construction

Mental Health in Construction

Construction workers can be overlooked when it comes to mental health. These employees are under as much stress as any other sector but are overlooked when it comes to giving them any help if they have mental issues of any sort.

At New Foundation Counselling we recognise that there are some who would benefit from help that are working in the construction industry. New Foundation Counselling is made up of people who have worked in this sector and can recognise the issues in people. They hand pick counsellors that are right for helping with the mental issues that arise.

Issues can be anything from stress over money, divorce, not getting on with other members of the team or just about anything else that can arise.

Don't let your employees suffer without you realizing that there can be something done to help.
